State Repression Cuts Internet over 50 times in 2016

By Lyndal Rowlandskeepiton_social_animated

(IPS) – Governments around the world shut down the internet more than 50 times in 2016 – suppressing elections, slowing economies and limiting free speech.

In the worst cases internet shutdowns have been associated with human rights violations, Deji Olukotun, Senior Global Advocacy Manager at digital rights organisation Access Now told IPS.

“What we have found is that internet shutdowns go hand in hand with atrocities” said Olukotun.egypt_revolution_blogpost1000

“In Ethiopia there’s been consistent blocking this year of social media and internet.” Dozens of people have died in protests in Ethiopia in 2016, “many of them during the kind of blackout where it’s difficult to report on what’s happening,” he said. MEXICO: ANARCHIST PRISONER LUIS FERNANDO SOTELO RESENTENCED

From Enlace Zapatista  Translation submitted to It’s Going Downfreedom-fernando-sotelo

The modification enacted by the Superior Court of “Justice” on the sentence of our compañero Luis Fernando Sotelo is a joke. The reduction of the sentence to 13 years [from 33 years], is not to serve justice, but is a mockery of it. The irregularities in the process have been denounced innumerable times. Evidence doesn’t exist to incriminate him and during the trial the only eyewitness, the driver of the metro-bus, said he did not recognize our compañero.

Why is he still in prison? It is not for judicial reasons, but political ones. It is punishment for social protest. They want to keep him imprisoned as an example. Our compañero is detained under the command of the government of Mexico City, lead by Miguel Ángel Mancera. Or perhaps also the rumors of corruption of the Fourth Chamber of the Superior Criminal Court are more correct?libertad-sotelo1

Erdogan Jails and Tortures 195,000 People who Might not Like Him. 512 Kids under 6 Years. 5,971 children

prisoners-turkey

The few hours that the assault lasted are serving the Turkish president very well. Without any trial, without evidence, without elements of judgment, without international observers, Erdogan continues with his purge … without limits.

A state Emergency Decree, has served, to detain 195,000 opponents, dissidents or simply unconnected people. The figures have been compiled by the Istanbul Human Rights Association (İHD) which has presented them in front of Bakırköy women’s prison.cnlzhvjwaaadndv

The report stressed that women prisoners are ‘being  killed by solitary confinement’, it demanded the release of the women prisoners with illnesses and denounced the defenceless situation of  the children who are incarcerated with their mothers.

In total there are 510 children prisoners under 6 years old.

The association has estimated that there are 5,971 minors in Erdogan’s  prisons and 79  LGBT prisoners.

The main problems faced by prisoners of Erdogan are poor nutrition and unhealthy food that cause stomach upsets and poor hygiene in cells of 6-7 people.torture-collage

However, the worst situation is for political prisoners: they are subjected to torture in jail and forced nudity.

comments:

..’Erdogan is by now clearly mentally unfit to hold office. His  worsening paranoid schizophrenic symptoms, linked to his extreme megalomania has led him to force a civil war with the 18 million Kurdish minority, who were well embarked on a process  of peaceful integration. Gaining popularity and power in a controlled press by his xenophobic excesses his paranoid obsession with possible enemies has nevertheless let loose massive purges, torture, blackmail and invasions in Syria and Iraq that would make dictators like Pol Pot or Josef Stalin blush’.

The Evidence: Is Rex Tillerson of Exxon the Top Climate Killer?

Climate criminal number one — Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson

by There’s no better face of climate catastrophe than ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson. Exxon’s size alone makes Tillerson our “Ace of Spades” climate criminal. (And I vote David and Charles Koch, in that order, as the King and Queen — but more on these rankings in a bit.)

Mr. Tillerson first hit these pages (and our radar) in this post — Who is the enemy leading us to Climate Catastrophe? Here we quote Bill McKibben, who quotes Naomi Klein: Continue reading “The Evidence: Is Rex Tillerson of Exxon the Top Climate Killer?”

Brazilians Revolt: Post-Coup Politicos to pass ‘Social Massacre’ Package and block Anti-Corruption

>> Parlamento de Brasil aprueba enmienda que congela inversión social por 20 años

Brazil’s Congress voted by 400 to 1 to reject an anti corruption bill signed by 2.5 million citizens, and gave themselves more immunity. Now they vote through massive cuts and  sell off public assets to foreign corporations at bargain prices.57aa51e2c361880a418b456b
Amid massive protests, neoliberal government installed after coup aims to lock 20-year spending freeze into constitution

by Nadia Prupis, 12 Comments   Brazil’s new neoliberal government has pushed through the most socially retrogressive austerity package in the world, as  a  United Nations official had warned on Friday, calling the proposed 20-year freeze on social spending a “radical measure, lacking in all nuance and compassion.”

Under President Michel Temer, who seized power after a coup ousted the democratically elected Dilma Rousseff, Brazil’s first female president, the spending freeze will be locked into the country’s constitution.

The senate held a final vote on the measure Tuesday 13th and it  was passed by the servile corrupt politicians.

In response to the news, Philip Alston, the U.N. special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, decried the bill known as PEC55.

“This is a radical measure, lacking in all nuance and compassion,” he said in a statement, calling the package an attack on the poor. “It is completely inappropriate to freeze only social expenditure and to tie the hands of all future governments for another two decades. This amendment  will place Brazil in a socially retrogressive category all of its own.”Image result for brasil protesta dec 12

WHAT ANARCHISTS HAVE BEEN SAYING FOR YEARS, AND WHAT LIBERALS NEED TO START HEARING

Originally published to It’s Going Down

On Wednesday, December 7th at Texas A & M University, as FBI agents monitored hundreds of protesters from the tops of roofs, heavily armed riot police clashed with demonstrators bent on disrupting and shutting down an event organized by Preston Wiginton, a 51 year old former student of the campus and long time white supremacist.

The event featured a talk by Richard Spencer, a leading ideologue within the growing “Alt-Right,” which attempts to re-brand fascist, Neo-Nazi, and white nationalist ideas for the millennial generation in order to create an all-white fascist “ethno-state.”1947916_746209005390074_17517994_n

The clashes that erupted on the campus are just the latest in a string of growing confrontations between autonomous revolutionaries and the racist far-Right which is acting as an auxiliary force of the Trump regime while attempting to push it farther to the right.

Suddenly, anarchists and antifa, who have been demonized and sidelined by the wider Left have been hearing from liberals and Leftists, “you’ve been right all along.” But while revolutionary anarchist ideas and starting to have a broader currency, many of the things that people are starting to pick up on, we have been saying for years. Exxon’s top Climate Murderer to be Secretary of State: 350.org comment

tillerson-climate-criminal

NEW YORK CITY – President-elect Donald Trump announced on Saturday afternoon that he has selected ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson as his Secretary of State nomination. 350.org Executive Director May Boeve issued the following reaction:

“This is unfathomable. We can’t let Trump put the world’s largest oil company in charge of our international climate policy. Tillerson may be a friend of Putin’s, but he’s no friend of the planet. ExxonMobil is still a leading funder of climate denial and is pursuing a business plan that will destroy our future. Tillerson deserves a federal investigation, not federal office.

dapl_protest_0We’ll be pressuring Senators to turn the confirmation process into a hearing on ExxonMobil’s history of climate deception. If Exxon is found guilty of working with other oil companies to deceive the public and their shareholders about the threat of climate change, they could be on the hook for fraud and racketeering charges. It would be the largest corporate scandal in history and could not only stop Tillerson’s appointment, but take down the entire company.
