Planting out the Summer Crop– 3 Tips To Get Veggy Transplants Off To A Great Start!

shared with thanks from Old world garden        May is here, and with Spring in full force, it’s time to start thinking about planting the garden. I’m not talking about planting the early seed crops that get us out into the garden for the first time in months.

I’m talking about Planting The Garden – Big Time!  And that means transplanting those summer-loving, big tasting, high-producing crops like tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and other veggies into the garden.

I honestly can’t think of a more exciting time for a vegetable gardening fanatic than planting day!

Getting your vegetable plants off to a great start plays a major role in a successful harvest. And by following just a few simple steps on planting day, you can make sure your garden will grow and flourish all year long. Here are 3 of our favorite tips when it comes to successfully planting the garden.

Planting The Garden – 3 Tips To Success

#1 Don’t Rush The Big Day

One of the biggest mistakes people make is to rush planting day. When it comes to vegetable transplants, timing is everything. The soil needs to be warm, and the threat of frost needs to be past. If not, your plants can sit in cold soil and even worse, be damaged or destroyed by a late spring frost or freeze.planting the gardenTomato and pepper plants mulched and ready to grow!

When plants sit around in cold, damp conditions, bad things happen. Their growth can be permanently stunted, and their roots and stems can rot in the soil.

Yes, I know all of the nurseries and stores have those plants inside and looking all ready to go. The key – they are still inside! So pick them up now while the selection is good, but don’t put them into the ground just yet.

#2 Feed Your Plants

When it is time to transplant your vegetable plants in the ground, give them the perfect home! The planting hole you create for each plant will be their new home for the next 3 months or so, so fill it with food and make it a great one!

We start by creating all of our planting holes with a post hole digger.  It quickly makes a beautiful, extra wide hole that is a good 8 to 10” deep. That loosens the soil in a large space around the transplants going into the ground, allowing them a lot of space to quickly expand their roots.

And then we fill that hole back in with plant loving food! We mix in an equal amount of compost with the soil that came out of the hole. Then we add in a few crushed egg shells, a tablespoon of coffee grounds, and a couple of tablespoons of worm castings. Then we use that to fill back in around the transplant. The nutrient filled soil mix provides an incredible source of food as the plants begin to grow.  The worm castings have simply been an amazing additive to our plantings. They work wonders in fertilizing plants naturally. See : Planting With A Post Hole Digger  and  Why Egg Shells and Coffee Grounds Are Great For The Garden

#3 – Mulch Those Plants!

I can’t stress enough how much mulching helps your plants! It is critical.

First and foremost, it keeps out competing weeds. And those weeds, if present, steal all of the valuable nutrients from the soil, and leave your plants hungry. Mulching also insulates the root zone of plants. This keeps the plants from overheating on hot days, and can keep them warmer if a cold snap hits. And, if you mulch directly around your plants with a little compost, it can feed your plants too!

We use a 1″ to 2″ thick mulching of compost about 8″ in diameter around each plant. We then cover the rest of the area in straw, leaving no dirt at all exposed in our growing rows. No exposed soil – no weeds!

And by using the compost, every time we water or it rains, the nutrients leach into the soil, helping to feed our plants all summer long.

There you have it, our top 3 planting day tips. Here is to a great 2017 garden!

Happy Gardening, Jim and Mary. We hope you enjoyed this week’s gardening article!

WWN Guide To Surviving A Nuclear Apocalypse

April 28, 2017 –WWN WORLD NEWS   255 SHARES  Comments
WITH death by nuclear fire back at the top of everyone’s ‘shit I’m afraid of right now’ lists, many people have started thinking about preparing for survival in a scorched, post-apocalyptic wasteland.
If you’re unsure as to what you should ‘pack’ for your journey into the unknown, then allow WWN to walk you through 5 things every Irish person should have in their bunker…
1) Drink
Life in a nuclear fallout shelter is zero craic, unless you get yourself well oiled. Remember; space is limited, so don’t stow cans. Spirits are a far more concentrated, effective way to get yourself shit-faced and ignore the scrabblings of the damned as they try to claw their way in.
2) Iodine pills
The government sent them to you, you threw them in the drawer with the old birthday cards and the Nokia chargers.. now’s the time to put them iodine-ey bad boys to use! Put them in your bunker so you can neck them swiftly when the time comes. Continue reading “WWN Guide To Surviving A Nuclear Apocalypse”

‘SIDE BY SIDE, Facing Repression Together’ – New Campaign Launched

SIDE BY SIDE://colzeacolzeblog.wordpress.com

SIDE BY SIDE we confront Repression

Various anarchist groups have together launched the SIDE BY SIDE campaign . Let’s jointly face the repression and show solidarity with the people indicted more than two years ago in the so-called Operation Piñata, and other similar operations that, with the excuse of anti-terrorism, have attacked the anarchist movement.

SIDE BY SIDE, facing together the repression that seeks to dissuade us, immobilize us, discourage us. Together, not isolated. With the strength that we try to understand our differences and learn to find ourselves in complicities.
SIDE BY SIDE, that’s what we call this campaign, this cry of resistance, this new challenge to power. Another attempt to break the silence, to make visible the social conflict increasingly evident as a result of the sharpening of the structural crisis of the capitalist system.

Biggest ever general Strike Sweeps Brazil

Anti-Temer strike paralyses major cities

Brazil’s economy shrank 3.8 percent in 2015 ..

Nationwide strikes, led by Brazilian unions protesting against President Michel Temer’s austerity measures, crippled public transport in major cities across the country, while factories, businesses and schools remained closed.

Cities were successfully closed down despite floods of Tear Gas

Unions and leftwing organisations called for the general strike on Friday to oppose Temer’s plan to slash pension benefits and other austerity reforms. The strike appeared to be having greatest effect in heavily unionised parts of the economy, including transportation, schools, the post office and some hospital staff.

The CUT union estimated that at least 35 million workers went on strike. On the other hand  the establishment GLOBO TV channel incredibly failed to mention the strike on its mid day news.

On the streets, police clashed with demonstrators in several cities, blocking protesters from entering airports and firing tear gas in efforts to free roadways.

Sao Paulo, Brazil’s most populous city and financial powerhouse, was worst hit by the strikes.

Police used tear gas to clear highways of protesters but bus services, the metro and trains all stopped working, bringing the city temporarily to a standstill.

“It is going to be the biggest strike in the history of Brazil,” said Paulo Pereira da Silva, president of trade union group Forca Sindical.

In Rio de Janeiro, protesters lit fires on a major bridge, disrupting commuter traffic, while police used tear gas to force a small crowd of protesters from outside the main bus station.

However, the city appeared to be less affected, with private businesses such as restaurants, cafes and shops opening normally.

In the capital Brasilia and in Belo Horizonte, another major city, the metro systems were completely closed down. Curitiba, the city where Brazil’s huge “Operation Car Wash” anti-corruption investigation is based, was left without bus services.

Temer has said that without severe fiscal discipline and belt tightening, Latin America’s biggest economy will not be able to exit a two-year recession.

The most controversial measure is to raise the retirement age to 65 for men and 62 for women, up from 60 and 55 at present.

The government is also pushing for a liberalisation of labour laws and has succeeded in getting Congress to pass a 20-year spending freeze.

The struggle over austerity comes against a backdrop of worsening conditions for ordinary Brazilians.

The country’s economy shrank 3.8 percent in 2015 and is expected to have contracted a further 3.5 percent in 2016, the most painful recession in a century.

The miserable economic scenario is dovetailing with the country’s worst corruption crisis in history. The “Car Wash” probe has uncovered a massive network of embezzlement and bribery at the heart of Brazil’s economic and political elite.

Eight of Temer’s ministers are under investigation and the president himself has been accused of chairing a meeting where his PMDB party negotiated a $40m bribe from the Odebrecht engineering conglomerate. Temer and his allies deny any wrongdoing.

“Temer does not even want to negotiate,” said Vagner Freitas, national president of the Central Workers Union (CUT), Brazil’s biggest labour confederation, said in a statement.

“He just wants to meet the demands of the businessmen who financed the coup precisely to end social security and legalise the exploitation of workers.”

Temer’s spokesperson Marcio de Freitas rejected the union’s criticism, saying the government was working to undo the economic damage wrought under the Workers Party government, which had the backing of the CUT.

“The inheritance of that was 13 million unemployed,” he said. “The government is carrying out reforms to change this situation, to create jobs and economic growth.”
