With the expansion of neo-fascist and neo-nazi groups in the shadows of ever more racist, xenophobic and sexist “traditional” conservative right-wing political parties, confusion over the significance of the liberal freedom of speech can paralyse radical political criticism and action. We share below a timely analysis from CrimethInc on the limits of free dialogue when politics must be conceived of as war, as a conflict between ways of life.

We need Not Just Free Speech……….. but Freedom Itself

Maybe you missed this, but you’re not in a dialogue. Your views are beside the point. Argue all you want—your adversaries are glad to see you waste your breath. Better yet if you protest: they’d rather you carry a sign than do more. They’ll keep you talking as long as they can, just to tire you out—to buy time.

They intend to force their agenda on you. That’s what all the guns are for, what the police and drones and surveillance cameras are for, what the FBI and CIA and NSA are for, what all those laws and courts and executive orders are for. It’s what their church is for, what those racist memes are for, what online harassment and bullying are for. It’s what gay bashings and church burnings are for. Anarchist prisoner Umut Firat now over 50 days on Hunger Strike in Turkey

The anarchist prisoner Umut Firat (imprisoned for 23 years) has passed Day 50 of his hunger strike. Recently, Unut was transferred to prison number 4 Yenisakran, type T (according to the security levels of the Turkish prison system) in Izmir itself. (see address below).

Body searches at the hands of regime guards, and prison conditions are some of his grounds for protest. The demands of the prisoners, the repression and torture suffered daily, are ignored.

Conditions of detention in Turkey, especially since the failed coup, have worsened significantly. Prisoners sleep in groups of 19 in cells that fit 14, are forced to sleep on blood-stained beds, only two visits of 45 minutes are allowed every month….

TWO ANARCHISTS ARRESTED FOR HAVING GUNS, GABRIEL FREED, CARMEN JAILED

SPAIN: OPERATION “BUYO”, TWO ANARCHISTS GABRIEL POMBO DA SILVA AND CARMEN OTERO

On Thursday, January 26, 2017, the Guardia Civil detained two comrades, Gabriel Pombo da Silva and Carmen Otero, as part of the Operation “Buyo” directed by the Court of Instruction n ° 4 of Vigo. The anarchists are accused in a first instance of illicit possession of weapons: 8 firearms, 6 of them detonating pistols ”transformed to make real fire”, 200 metal cartridges of different calibres and also were found close to 3000 €.

According to the statements of the prosecution our comrades tried to ‘form an anarchist cell with the materials found in the flat of one of them’. This investigation was initiated with information from an earlier operation against arms and ammunition trafficking which the police claim have links with the two detained anarchists. Turkish State Terror jails journalists, charges 839, as Brit PM does an Arms Deal

By Turkish Minute....Turkey’s press freedom woes are worse than you think, says a report published on Thursday by new advocacy group the Stockholm Center for Freedom (SCF), according to which 191 journalists are in jail, 92 are wanted and 839 have been charged.

SCF has documented the individual cases of 191 journalists who are either convicted and serving time in prison or jailed in pre-trial detention.

According to the Swedish-based center, most of the journalists have not even seen an indictment against them. The report stated that 92 journalists are wanted for arrest but remain at large either in Turkey or abroad. Eugeni Gurnès: anarchist mayor executed by Spain

via Indymedia Barcelona with thanks. Eugeni Guernès, a Catalan anarchist, driver by profession and a CNT union member, was mayor and councillor in the Llagostera town in Girona, Catalonia. between 24 November 1936 and 10 May 1938.

When the war and the Republic were lost and the fascist coup d’etat finally triumphed he had to march to exile like so many militants. On his return he was denounced, arrested, imprisoned and subsequently sentenced to death and executed on 7 May 1943 in Girona old cemetery, where with eight more people from Llagostera he was executed by firing squad .Eugeni and his companion Carmen Mascort

The war of resistance had ended in March 1939, but in the cemetery of Girona, more than five hundred people were shot dead between 1939 and 1945 and the dictatorship continued for nearly 40 years, with support from western powers. China Issues a Nuclear Warning to Donald Trump and the United States

Beijing — Following comments made by White House spokesman Sean Spicer on Monday in which he said the United States would absolutely protect its interests in the South China Sea, the Asian superpower has fired back through its state-run media — going so far as to suggest China should beef up its nuclear arsenal in the face of Donald Trump’s presidency.

As reported by the newswire service Agence-France Presse (AFP) on Tuesday, “In recent days, Chinese social media has carried pictures purporting to show an advanced intercontinental ballistic missile system deployed in the Northeast.”

Make America Wait Again. That’s what Donald Trump’s energy policy amounts to. Stop all the clocks, put the technological revolution on hold, ensure that the transition from fossil fuels to clean power is delayed for as long as possible.

Trump is the president corporate Luddites have dreamt of; the man who will let them squeeze every last cent from their oil and coal reserves before they become worthless. They need him because science, technology and people’s demands for a safe and stable world have left them stranded. There is no fair fight that they can win, so their last hope lies with a government that will rig the competition. smog5
