A Highway Megaproject Tears at the Heart of New Guinea’s Rainforest

…. illustrations and #FreeWestPapua info added…. The Indonesian government is building a 2,700-mile road network on the island of New Guinea, opening up some of the world’s last great tropical rainforests to development and threatening unique indigenous cultures. Can international pressure force Indonesia to scale back this megaproject?

The Pacific island of New Guinea, which harbors one of the world’s largest and most intact tropical rainforests, is the epicenter of Australasia’s tropical biodiversity. The island’s unique denizens, including tree-kangaroos and birds of paradise, are representative of a regional flora and fauna so fantastically diverse that Charles Darwin once mused such creatures must have been made by a “separate Creator.” Today, researchers are still merely sampling its primeval intricacies.

New Guinea is also among the most culturally and linguistically diverse places on earth, with human populations that are genetically distinct from all others alive today. Not until the 1930s did the Western world discover many hundreds of unique indigenous societies in New Guinea’s vast mountains and highlands. And only in the 1950s did European colonists, miners, and loggers begin to exploit the region.

Today, these unique rainforests are being carved up by a massive, ill-advised, and exceptionally risky road-building scheme. The Trans-Papua Highway will sprawl like a massive spiderweb over much of the Indonesian-ruled, western half of New Guinea, known as Papua or West Papua.

Totalling 2,700 miles in length, this highway network will penetrate deeply into densely forested or remote mountainous regions to increase access to minerals, fossil fuels, timber, and land for agri-business ventures, including vast palm oil plantations. Many road segments will traverse precariously steep, virgin terrain. Continue reading “#FreeWestPapua: Trans-Papua Highway.. Ecocide and Genocide for Quick Cash $$”

Fossil Companies Poison the Air.. we Pay, we Sicken, We die

Endesa, Iberdrola and Gas Natural pollute… You Pay

Este correo es seguro.

from Greenpeace Spain   All together we can continue denouncing the responsibility of the Spanish energy companies,. Endesa, Iberdrola and Gas Natural for their air pollution, for the blockade of renewables and forthe soaring price of electricity, all with Government approval! We are tired of them polluting and us always paying, with our health and with our pockets!

Time to Act!

This morning we have faced up to the almighty Spanish power companies. We appeared at the offices of Endesa, Iberdrola and Gas Natural Fenosa in Madrid, Bilbao and Barcelona respectively, asking them to explain the pollution and its relation with high energy prices. We have done it to defend our environment and for all of us.

27,000 premature deaths in Spain due to pollution.. A report by Ecologistas en Acción reports that 45 million Spaniards are exposed to contaminated air…….

sun taxBecause these three companies are choking us with their emissions, their waste, and with an exorbitant electricity bill as well as depriving us of the right to produce clean energy (due to the infamous Tax on the Sun) and to participate in an energetic model that they have designed to their liking. Huge Direct Action against obsolete Nukes: Greenpeace

240 Greenpeace Activists Take Direct Action Protesting Europe’s Aging Nuclear Reactors

Greenpeace InternationalBy Isadora Wronski     Last week, 240 Greenpeace activists from national and regional offices took action across Europe to highlight the risk of aging nuclear reactors.

In Switzerland, about 100 Greenpeace activists from six different countries entered the station at Beznau. They climbed the superstructure of the reactor and hung banners demanding the immediate shut-down of the 45 year old power plant while a paraglider circled the sky. Let Them Go, Mr Putin: 27 Activists and Greenpeace boat kidnapped

by Stuart Jeanne Bramhall / September 22nd, 2013oildisaster3

When it suits its purposes, Russia seems to have the same propensity as the US to thumb its nose at international law. Two weeks ago, Putin acquired immense international stature and prestige by halting the imminent threat of US missile strikes in Syria. Now he seems to have squandered it all by illegally seizing a Greenpeace vessel in international waters. Continue reading “Let Them Go, Mr Putin: 27 Activists and Greenpeace boat kidnapped”

eptember. The Arctic has lost more sea ice this year than at any time since satellite records began in 1979, Nasa says. Scientists involved in the calculations say it is part of a fundamental change. What is more, sea ice normally reaches its low point in September so it is thought likely that this year’s melt will continue to grow.

Brazil port blocked over Amazon law /Veto parcial mantém florestas sob risco

Greenpeace temporarily blocked a freighter from being loaded at a northern Brazilian port in protest over a partial presidential veto of a land-use bill seen as harming the Amazon

The environmental group said on its website on Saturday that activists ferried by its Rainbow Warrior vessel occupied a giant pile of pig iron on the dock while another team scaled two cranes to stop them from loading the raw material of iron and steel onto the US-bound Clipper Hope.

The activists then unfurled banners proclaiming “Amazon Crime” and “Dilma’s dirty secret,” in protest at President Dilma Rousseff’s partial veto Friday of 12 controversial articles of the new code regulating the use of land on rural properties.

“The Amazon turns to Charcoal, Brazil Stop the Chainsaw,” said a huge banner tied to a crane by the activists. Continue reading “Brazil port blocked over Amazon law /Veto parcial mantém florestas sob risco”

Discovery Channel BANS Climate Change News

Discovery Channel has stated that it was taking out the last episode due to ‘scheduling conflicts’, but others believe the channel is cutting the episode ‘On Thin Ice’ because it deals directly with the impacts of global warming on the Arctic and Antarctic.

My bet is that Discovery and other channels were yet again quietly bought off by the Climate Change Deniers, financed by the swill of 100s of billions profit made by the criminal oil companies every year, while paying NONE of the costs to the  climate, environment and pollution caused ill health and deaths which they caused.

And the US is not alone, around one third of the networks to air the series worldwide have opted on accepting the series from the BBC without the last episode.

“It’s a bit like pressing the stop button on Titanic just as the iceberg appears,” a representative with Greenpeace told The Telegraph. “Climate change is the most important part of the polar story, the warming in the Arctic can’t be denied, it’s changing the environment there in ways that are making experts fearful for the future.”

There is a cheap, CO2 and pollution free alternative to oil, at least for transport, suppressed by the oil companies.. That’s NH3 fuel, check it out here.  note. posts on NH3 the CO2-Free fuel now have their own blog HERE.. http://co2freefuelexistsnow.wordpress.com/ Continue reading “Discovery Channel BANS Climate Change News”
